Tokyo: Before & After Photo Exhibition
Concept
The exhibition “Tokyo Before/After” aims to promote a deeper understanding of Tokyo through the works of Japanese photographers from two distinct periods: the 1930s – 1940s and the period after 2010. By presenting approximately 80 photographs in juxtaposition, the exhibition offers visitors an opportunity to compare the city’s urban landscape, social environment, and cultural identity across different eras, revealing how Tokyo has evolved while retaining elements of its historical character.
The exhibition highlights the significance of the 1930s-1940s as a period during which the foundation of modern Tokyo began to take shape. During this time, photographers utilized rapidly developing photographic techniques to capture the dynamic coexistence of tradition and modernity within the city. In contrast, the contemporary works document Tokyo’s ongoing transformation since the 2010s, reflecting changing social circumstances, the impact of the Great East Japan Earthquake, preparations surrounding the 2020 Olympic Games, and the influence of digital technology on photographic practices.
Through this comparison of historical and contemporary perspectives, the exhibition encourages audiences to reflect on the past, present, and future of Tokyo. It further demonstrates the evolution of photographic expression and the diverse viewpoints of photographers who have documented the city over time. Ultimately, the exhibition seeks to strengthen international cultural understanding by providing insight into Tokyo as a multifaceted metropolis and by fostering appreciation for Japanese photography and visual culture.
